How Much Does an EV Charger Installation Cost in Northland?

Real costs for installing a home EV charger in Whangarei or Kerikeri. 7kW vs 22kW, switchboard upgrades, what's included, and how to avoid hidden extras.

If you're thinking about getting a home EV charger in Whangarei or Kerikeri, the first question is usually: what's this actually going to cost me?

Here's a straight, no-nonsense breakdown based on what we install every week across Northland.

The Short Answer

A standard 7kW home wallbox, professionally installed in Whangarei or Kerikeri, typically costs between $1,800 and $2,800 supplied and installed.

That covers a quality charger, the cabling, the switchboard work, the compliance certificate, and our 5-year installation warranty.

More complex jobs — long cable runs, three-phase 22kW chargers, or switchboard upgrades — sit higher. We'll talk you through each.

What Affects the Price

1. The charger itself

Brand and feature set matter. Some of the price points we see:

  • Entry-level Type 2 wallbox: $700–$1,000 unit only
  • Mid-tier smart charger (Wallbox Pulsar, EO Mini, TP-Link): $1,000–$1,400
  • Tesla Wall Connector: ~$1,000
  • Premium / load-managed / OCPP units: $1,400–$2,000+

We're brand-agnostic — we'll recommend what's right for your car and how you plan to use the charger.

2. Cable run distance

The further the charger is from your switchboard, the more cable and labour involved. A garage right next to the meter box is much cheaper to install than one that is at the end of a long rural driveway.

3. Switchboard capacity

This is the one that catches people out. Many older Northland homes have switchboards that can't safely take an additional 32A circuit without an upgrade.

A switchboard upgrade typically adds $1,500–$3,500. We always check this during the quote so you know upfront.

4. Single-phase vs three-phase

A 22kW charger needs three-phase power and can charge much faster than a normal 7.4kW home charger, but only if your EV supports 22kW AC charging. Many homes only have single-phase power, so we check your switchboard, supply capacity, and vehicle before recommending a charger. If three-phase has to be added, the lines company may need to be involved, which adds cost and time.

What Should Be Included in Your Quote

Make sure any EV charger quote in Whangarei or Kerikeri includes:

  • The charger unit (specified by model)
  • Cabling and conduit to your chosen location
  • A dedicated 32A circuit (or larger for three-phase)
  • RCD/RCBO protection
  • Switchboard work and any required upgrades quoted separately
  • Compliance certificate
  • A warranty on the installation work itself

If any of these are missing, you're not really comparing like-for-like quotes.

What to Watch Out For

  • "From" pricing: anything advertised as "from $1,500 installed" usually assumes a simple job right next to the switchboard. Get a written quote for your specific home.
  • No switchboard check: a quote that doesn't include a switchboard assessment is incomplete. Adding an EV circuit to an unsuitable board is unsafe and won't pass certification.
  • No certificate of compliance: EV chargers must be installed by a registered electrician and certified. No certificate = no insurance cover if something goes wrong.
