Electrical Safety, RCD & House Rewiring Questions
We check the switchboard, RCD protection, visible wiring condition, earthing, a sample of outlets and switches, and any obvious hazards like overloaded circuits or DIY work. You get a written report of what's safe, what needs attention, and what it would cost to put right.
RCDs (safety switches) cut power in milliseconds when electricity leaks to earth — like through a person. New circuits legally require them, and many older Northland homes have none at all. Adding RCD protection to an older board is one of the highest-value safety upgrades you can make.
Warning signs include cloth-insulated or rubber wiring (common pre-1960s), frequent tripping or blown fuses, warm outlets or switches, flickering lights, and a lack of earth wiring. Homes with old TRS or VIR cable should be assessed — the insulation becomes brittle and dangerous with age.
