How to Get the Most Out of Your Heat Pump in Summer – Northland’s Guide to Efficient Cooling
When the Northland summer heat sets in, a well-installed heat pump can be your best friend. Modern heat pumps are designed to keep your home cool, dry, and comfortable — but using them efficiently can make a big difference to both comfort and your power bill. At Gibson Electrical, we’ve helped hundreds of homeowners across Kerikeri, Whangārei, and the wider Northland region get the most out of their Fujitsu, Mitsubishi Electric, and Rinnai heat pumps.
Here’s how you can make sure your system performs at its best this summer.
1. Use the Right Mode for Cooling
It sounds simple, but one of the most common mistakes people make is leaving their heat pump in the wrong mode.
To cool your home effectively, set your system to “Cool” mode rather than “Auto” or “Dry.”
- Cool mode maintains a consistent temperature, ideal for long, hot days.
- Auto mode can cause the system to switch between heating and cooling, wasting energy.
- Dry mode is useful for muggy, humid days — it won’t blow as cold, but it will remove moisture from the air.
For most Northland homes, using “Cool” mode with a temperature between 22–24°C strikes the right balance between comfort and energy efficiency.
2. Keep Doors and Windows Closed
Heat pumps work best in sealed spaces. If warm outdoor air constantly enters the room, your unit will work harder, increasing power use and reducing efficiency.
Close doors and windows while the heat pump runs, and if you have an open-plan home, try cooling only the areas you use most.
For example, cool your lounge and bedrooms in the evening, then open up the rest of the house later once the air is comfortable.
3. Clean or Replace Your Filters Regularly
Dust and dirt build-up in filters restricts airflow, forcing your heat pump to work harder and reducing cooling power.
We recommend cleaning your filters every 4–6 weeks during summer — especially if you live near the coast or on a dusty road.
If you’re not sure how to do this, our Gibson Electrical service team can show you during your next maintenance visit or do a full clean and system check for you.
4. Use Your Timer and Fan Settings Smartly
Your heat pump’s timer and fan functions can help you cool your home more efficiently:
- Timer: Set the unit to start just before you arrive home, so you walk into a cool, comfortable space.
- Fan: Use “Auto Fan” for everyday cooling, or a higher fan speed when first turning it on to quickly bring the room temperature down.
Running your system continuously on the lowest temperature doesn’t cool faster — it just wastes energy.
5. Keep the Outdoor Unit Clear
The outdoor unit (the condenser) releases warm air. If it’s blocked by plants, garden furniture, or debris, it can’t operate efficiently.
Make sure there’s at least 30–50 cm of clearance around it and check occasionally that nothing is obstructing the airflow.
6. Get Professional Servicing
Even the best systems lose performance over time if not maintained. A professional service once a year helps keep your heat pump running like new — and ensures your warranty stays valid.
Our team at Gibson Electrical offers annual servicing, deep cleaning, and performance checks for all major brands, including Fujitsu, Mitsubishi Electric, and Rinnai.
7. Think About Positioning (for New Buyers)
If you’re thinking of installing a new heat pump this summer, correct placement is key.
In homes, we often recommend positioning indoor units on interior walls away from direct sunlight, and outdoor units in shaded, well-ventilated areas to improve efficiency.
Our installers in Kerikeri, Whangārei, and surrounding areas can help you choose the right size and location for your home’s layout.
